Principal’s Message

Dear Edison Families,

Be sure to calendar our next Principal Coffees on Tuesday, March 12 at 8:30, in the Multi-Purpose Room. These coffees are meant as an opportunity to engage in informal conversations about our school.  At our January and February coffees, presentations were given on the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program, and data shared regarding student behavior.  Out of this discussion, some concern was raised regarding supporting students on the yard at recesses, particularly in the younger grades (grades K-2).  As a result, we have taken some steps in addressing this, including some ideas for parents to help:

Steps the school is taking:

  • Additional staffingWe have added another temporary staff member on the yard for supervision at morning and lunch recesses, and have hired a new paraprofessional who will have lunch supervision incorporated into her duties.
  • We have added the Jr. Coaches (5th grade students) program to the Kinder-2nd lunch recess as well.  These 5th grade students will help to engage our younger students in more structured activities.
  • We will be reviving the game cart that was taken out regularly earlier this year, weather permitting.  We had stopped taking it out when the weather turned rainy.  This should provide even more activities for students during lunch recess.

Things parents can do to help:

  • Please talk with your child about PBIS expectations at home.  You as the parent are your child's first teacher, and your help in having students be aware of school expectations is critical.  Here are some of the talking points we share with students regarding expected behavior on the playground, from our PBIS Matrix:

  • We are in need of parent/guardian volunteers to help with our "Lunch Buddies" program.  Lunch Buddies are parents that simply help students during lunch with opening lunch packages, supervising during eating time as well as supervision of play time on the playground during lunch recess.  However much you can help out is appreciated:  One day of volunteer support, several days, or even a day or two each week.  Just come by the office @ 11:40, in advance of our lunch period from 11:45 - 12:30.  Your support for our students is greatly appreciated!

  • Yard Supervisor job‚Äč – If you have an hour to spare each day, please consider applying for a school district position as a Yard Supervisor.  Edison has yard supervisors that work at lunch recess, but we can always use more.  Although not a high-paying position, the role of Yard Supervisor is quite a rewarding and fun way to support our students.  If you are interested, please speak with our office staff, who can help guide you through the application process.

Once again, thank you all for your engagement in the school community.  Your support is a vital part of success for all of our students!
